Vacancy 3D Engineer

At the Fieldwork Company we help develop ecological insight via innovative techniques that contribute to ecosystem recovery. We have over 10 years of experience in the field of ecosystem restoration, and since several years we work with 3D printed structures to aid these restoration projects. The 3D printed structures for example help stabilize the seabed to increase seedling survival of seagrass plants, or provide a suitable & degradable substrate for shellfish growth. We experiment with both the designs and the biodegradable material, in conjunction with the techniques required to produce the prototypes. Our scale of printers ranges from 30x30 cm (FDM) filament to robotic scale 6 m diameter with hopper.

The team

We are a team of builders and practical thinkers with field workers, marine ecologists, technicians and innovators who are always looking for new knowledge, improvements and solutions. Our staff consists of people from various backgrounds and nationalities and therefore the spoken (and written) languages are English and Dutch. We work closely together with various universities, NGO’s and companies, and have a non-commercial approach to this subject.

The ideal candidate has an inquisitive mind, a solid understanding of Sprutcam & CAD/CURA/3D print software, a curiosity-driven brain and is up for a challenge or two. Most of the work we do with both the technique and material is at the forefront of what has been done or is possible, so steep learning curves and the occasional setback are part of the job. You can think along with the functional designing of structures, feel comfortable in the search and processing of the right biodegradable components, and can think out of the box to find some unorthodox solutions yourself. You are looking for a job with ample room for own initiative, the opportunity to contribute to ecosystem restoration, and enough options to develop yourself and your skills in this field of expertise.

What you bring to the table:

  • Preferably some years of experience in a similar role
  • Experience with Sprutcam for operating 3D printers and the use of CAD tools
  • Minimal basic knowledge of biopolymers, and the interest to further develop this knowledge
  • You know how to operate a fleet of 3D Printers in a R&D environment - which includes hardware and system maintenance and calibration
  • You are passionate about working on the development process and a team player liaising with universities and material manufacturers
  • You work pro-active, independent, practical, and a problem is just a challenge to you

What do we offer you

We are offering you a possibility to become part of our dedicated team of 9 people. Your default weeks (32/40h week) will be in Groningen, occasionally you will be asked to join fieldwork on site. You get a lot of freedom to organize your own agenda, we offer a salary that fits your knowledge and experience, a 6% pension compensation and a travel allowance of 19 ct/km.

Have you become enthusiastic about this position?

Send your resume and motivation to marga@fieldworkcompany.nl before February the 7, 2022. Questions about this vacancy can also be directed to Marga Harkema or +31 (0)50 7503390.

Vacancy Aquatic plant cultivation specialist

At the Fieldwork Company we help develop ecological insight via innovative techniques that contribute to ecosystem recovery. We have over 10 years of experience in the field of ecosystem restoration, with seagrass being one of the main topics. Over the course of these 10 years we have developed the DiS method for seagrass seeding, established a workflow for the overwinter storage of donor seeds, and have been working on the fundamentals of growing seagrass plants as donor material. This form of aquaculture is quite novice, and we hope it can ultimately provide a solution for seagrass restoration projects worldwide. All of this work we carry out in close cooperation with Groningen University for the scientific part

The team

At the fieldwork company we are a team of practical thinkers with field workers, marine ecologists, technicians and innovators who are always looking for new knowledge, improvements and solutions. The cultivation of seagrass comes with a lot of technical and ecological challenges and we are looking for someone who can provide practical, botanical and technical assistance. You will proactively think about the optimalisation of the nursery systems, are inquisitive about the growing process- and cycle of the seagrass plants in relation to the technical aspects of the nursery, and see problems rather as challenges then obstacles.

What you bring to the table:

  • You have a strong affinity with aquatic plant cultivation and growing; green fingers are natural to you
  • You are passionate about working with saltwater aquaria – both the botanical and technical aspects of these systems
  • Your background could be in (marine) biology or ecological research, but what’s more important is the affinity and/or experience with aquatic plant cultivation
  • You work pro-active, independent, organized and practical. The nursery’s are located in both Groningen and Lauwersoog, so a driver’s license is required (BE/trailer favourable)

We are offering you a possibility to become a part of our dedicated and motivated team. Your weeks (32/40h week) in the nursery will be structural and divided between the location in Groningen and Lauwersoog. You get a great deal of freedom to organize your own agenda. We are offering a salary fit to your knowledge and experience, a 6% pension compensation and a travel allowance of 19 ct/km.
