Bird scales for long-term monitoring
At the request of researchers from the University of Groningen (RUG), Tom as part of our R&D team has been busy developing a set of scales specifically designed for the long-term monitoring of birds in the field. Several units are now in use at the RUG.
The compact, programmable scale can be integrated into nest boxes, nests or other field set-ups and automatically records the weight of birds at an adjustable measurement interval.

Automated data collection
With every activation, the scale takes 20 measurements and records the average, the standard deviation and the time. This helps to identify anomalous measurements, for example when a bird moves or leaves the scale whilst being weighed. The data is stored locally on a micro SD card as a CSV file.
The measurement interval can be adjusted from a minimum of 5 seconds. Depending on the interval, the battery lasts for approximately two weeks. The scale can also be connected directly to a solar panel of up to 10 V.
Flexible integration
The scale can be programmed and customised via USB using our software and features such as a DIN connector with three optional input/output ports. These can be used, for example, to trigger cameras or other sensors, or to receive an alarm signal from external sensors.
A separate mounting base allows the scale to be attached to the ground, a nesting box or other structures.
