Seagrass nursery

One of the biggest problems we have with seagrass restoration is the loss of seeds after they have been sown. There are roughly three reasons for this: storm, current and sedimentation.
To eliminate these factors, we have started growing seagrass plants in a controlled environment. In our nursery the plants are prepared in perfect conditions for transplantation to the field.
As grown plants are much more resilient against natural influences compared to seeds, the survival rate in the field should be higher than the current seeding techniques.
Another advantage of this method is that we are no longer depending on a donor population.

Currently we are conducting experiments to determine if growing and transplanting complete plants from a nursery to the Wadden Sea/Grevelingen is a feasible method.
